Community Hall

St Nicholas's, Lincoln

The Churches of St Nicholas and St John was built in 1839 by Sir George Gilbert Scott (1811-1878) and William Bonython Moffatt.

Working for Wiles & Maguire we were asked to prepare a design to provide a new choir vestry, meeting room and ancillary facilities.  A recent 1980's addition to the church to provide parish rooms had fallen into disrepair and the decision was made during the early stages of the design that this phase of construction would be removed and the new facilities built in its place.

A key feature of the scheme was to remove the brickwork from a 'transept arch' in the north chancel wall which had been blocked up when alterations to the building were interrupted by the onset of World War I.

Our scheme included the insertion of a glazed screen within the existing transept arch, separating the Chancel from the new multipurpose activity space at 1st floor level.  The screen provides acoustic separation from the chancel, however, the glazing allows a new source of natural daylight into the worship space and offers an intriguing visual connection between the old and the new.

The Church of St Nicholas with St John is a Grade II listed building.
